We started a new art project in Studio today. We're creating self-portraits out of our handwriting. What you do is take a good profile picture of yourself (basically a nice head shot) and then, in Photo Shop or something similar, turn the image gray scale and then use whatever function will make it so there are only a few tones (in Photo Shop, you use the Cut Out option). From there, you take a graphite rub of the image that includes the basic outline of the image as well as the outline of the gradient areas. Then, you take a poem or even just a word and fill in the spaces with the words, sticking to the lights and darks, of course. It turns out really nice. Mike (the teacher; he doesn't let us call him Mr. Nichols) showed us ones that his fiancée has done. You can check out her work on her website.
